road note

If you have read this blog in the past you will remember that I have a thing about the cars I see on long trips. Actually, it's a way of fighting long-trip boredom. How many cars, what colors, what models, etc. So here's my Road Note for the trip from Cuyutlán to home: I saw one, just ONE, Smart Car* along all those miles. It was crossing into Mexico at the border as we drove into the US. That was it. One. Oh, and one Hummer, too. It counts as three Smarties!

*The above Smartie is the adorable Dorothy.

Good to see Dorothy again! I LOVE those incredible light globes, but could they be dangerous? So glad you didn't have any problems on the trip home.

I suppose if you set off a globos in a dry patch in Tahoe they could be dangerous, but they lift so high and burn out pretty quickly that they wouldn't pose a hazard in an open space. They are spectacular at the beach as they float out to sea. I will definitely buy some and take them south.

What are they like to drive? Are they comfortable for long distances?

Perfectly comfortable. Seats are well constructed, plenty of head and leg room, good sound system (how many speakers does one need in such a tiny car?), well-angled steering wheel. Not so great on a really bumpy or rough road, but on the freeway, very smooth. And at 44+ MPG what are a few bumps? Not a lot of "trunk" space. Actually, there is no trunk nor is there any room for a 3rd passenger. Choice of automatic or shift gives power on hills or for a spurt of speed.
